Form 1 – Prospecting Licence

In the 1897 Mines and Minerals Amendment Ordinance, a concession was granted to prospectors to take out a licence called an Extra Prospecting Licence for any number of claims, and for every 10 claims mentioned, a fee of £5 was payable. It was not applicable to coal or alluvial.

Stamps to the value of £3 were attached with a £2 rebate provided by the British South Africa Company to make up the £5 fee. An extra licence of 1/- could be issued only after the abandonment of claims registered under the extra licence.

Form 1 – Prospecting Licence (1903 Ordinance)

In 1903, a new Mines and Minerals Ordinance was introduced. The 1/- Prospecting Licence, and the £5 Extra Prospecting Licence were replace by a single £1 Prospecting Licence.

These were issued under the following conditions:

Any person of full age, and every duly appointed agent of any syndicate or company carrying on business in Southern Rhodesia, may, when duly authorised by the Administrator, take out at the office of a Mining Commissioner a prospecting licence or licences. Each such licence shall bear a stamp of the value of one pound sterling.

Form 9 – Certificate of Transfer

The holder of any mining claim was able to apply to the Mining Commissioner to transfer the holding to another party. The duty was £1 per £100 of the sale price.

Form 10 – Protection Certificate

Companies or individuals who failed to obtain an Inspection Certificate had their claims forfeited as soon as their inspection was due. However, in special circumstances, the Administrator was given a right to grant a Protection Certificate.

A Protection Certificate required a 10/- stamp to be attached per 10 claims or portion of 10 claims to which it related for any period of two months or portion of two months, of which it was granted.

Form 12 – Certificate of Registration after Transfer

Once a holder transferred a holding to another party, the new holder needed to apply for a new certificate of registration. Gold reef holdings attracted a 5/- duty.

Form 15 – Certificate of Transfer

The holder of any mining claim was able to apply to the Mining Commissioner to transfer the holding to another party. The duty was £1 per £100 of the sale price.
