Lever Brothers was a British manufacturing company founded in 1885 by brothers William Hesketh Lever (1851–1925) and James Darcy Lever (1854–1916). They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson.
In September 1929, Unilever was formed by a merger of the operations of Dutch Margarine Unie and British soapmaker Lever Brothers, with the name of the resulting company a portmanteau of the name of both companies Unilever. Unilever was the first modern multinational company.
In 1963, Unilever Ltd planned a £500,000 company, Lever Bros., Nyasaland to take over the branch of Lever Bros., Rhodesia. Lever Bros. (Nyasaland) Ltd became a subsidiary of Unilever producing crude and refined oils, a wide range of soaps, glycerine and animal feeds.
The Lever Brothers name was kept for a time as an imprint, as well as the name of the US subsidiary, Lever Brothers Company, and a Canadian subsidiary, Lever Brothers Limited. Lever Brothers was sold to a US capital firm Pensler Capital Corporation and renamed Korex in 2008.
Since its creation in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross’ sole objective has been to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife. It does so through its direct action around the world, as well as by encouraging the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) and promoting respect for it by governments and all weapon bearers. Its story is about the development of humanitarian action, the Geneva Conventions and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Within central Africa, the first branches were established through the British Red Cross Society, a society formed in 1870.
