Tobacco Sales Floor

Tobacco Sales Floor

Salisbury

Tobacco Sales Floor opened in 1958 in competition with Tobacco Auctions Limited and Tobacco Producers Floor.

From 1983 through to 1994 TSF, having advanced to a monopoly situation, handled the entire Zimbabwe flue-cured crop. During that period, world demand led to rapid and ongoing expansion of the crop size.

TSF moved to the present facility in 1986, and, with the capacity to trade over 2 million kilograms daily, has consolidated the reputation as one of the world’s largest and most efficient market places.

Tobacco Auctions (Nyasaland) Ltd

Limbe

In 1937, the Native Tobacco Board (NTB) reached an agreement with the settler-run Nyasaland Tobacco Association to institute an auction system similar to what was introduced in Southern Rhodesia in 1936. Tobacco was taken to the auction floors of the newly developed company, Tobacco Auctions (Nyasaland) Ltd in Limbe, where it was sold from a corrugated iron warehouse built in 1936.

From 1939, Tobacco Auctions (Nyasaland) Ltd were competing with Producers Warehouse Limited. In 1962 they were amalgamated as Auction Holdings Nyasaland Limited. In 1965, following Malawi’s Independence, the company was renamed Auction Holdings Limited.

J & M Lazarus

J & M Lazarus

Lourenço Marques

Joseph Lazarus and Maurice Lazarus were brothers of Jewish decent from the Britain. It is believed that they first arrived in Barberton, South Africa during the gold boom. They appear to have arrived in Lourenço Marques, Portuguese East Africa in 1899.

Two business locations are known in the city, one at No. 39 Araujo Street and the other at Avenida Aguiar. For a while, they kept a studio in Beira. They first advertised as photographers in the 1901 directory and in the same year they published A Souvenir of Lourenço Marques: an album of views of the town.

As part of their photography business, they also produced a range of postcards. One of their photographs of Chief Makwira and his wives (Malawi) appears on a postcard published by G. Budricks & Co.

Their last advertisement appears in 1907, although their box number is still listed in the 1909 edition. They sold their studio to Sidney Hocking.

Interflora

Interflora

Johannesburg

Interflora is the world’s largest, most recognized and respected flower delivery service. Supported by a network of over 40,000 florists worldwide, they deliver to approximately 140 countries, including South Africa.

In 1920 a florist, Joe Dobson, of Leighton’s Seedsmen and Florists in Glasgow, and a nurseryman, Carl Englemann in Essex were looking to increase their business. They knew of the Florists Telegraph Delivery Association (FTDA) which had existed in the US since 1910, and applied to join as foreign members.

In 1923 the UK arm of the FTDA was formed with 17 members. One of the straplines used in advertising was Flowers by Wire when the telegraph was actually used to communicate between florists. Later, telegrams were sent from member to member requesting deliveries to be made in the recipient florists area. In the original Interflora Directory, used by members, the longest established members could be recognised by their telegraphic address. This would be the only telegraphic address in that city to include the name Interflora.

In 1950, Interflora was established in South Africa. Interflora African Areas is made up of hundreds of members using their unique flower delivery service across South Africa and Africa including Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Interflora African Areas Head Office is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In 1953 the name changed to Interflora and the slogan Flowers Worldwide along with the Mercury Man roundel became well known. Say it with Flowers became the subsequent and most famous slogan associated with Interflora.
