The newest chapters of the Rhodesian Study Circle in Germany and France are holding their first special weekend in Bonn, Germany in 2018. This is a great opportunity to help celebrate and welcome the newest chapter’s first major meeting.

Friday, 1st June 2018

Arrival / Check-In / Lunch at GSI European Academy Bonn.

  • Welcome by local host, Dr Jan Ulrich Clauss RPSL and Gunnar Strehmel, both RSC Europe Regional Representatives.
  • 12:40  Walk to the Archiv der Philatelie, the biggest (not the most famous!) philatelic collection of the world.
  • 13:00  Guide through the holdings of the Archive, by Dr Andreas Hahn FRPSL, Director of the Archive
  • 14:30  Walk back to GSI, Tea Break
  • 15:00  Installing exhibits / preparing exchange premises
  • 16:00  1st Welcome Lecture – Rhodesia Lecture N° 1
  • 17:30  Transfer by car to Cologne and look around Cologne Cathedrale.
  • 19:00  Participation at monthly regular philatelic meeting at Alte Post close to the Cathedrale.
  • 20:15  Walk to Cathedrale (for those who want to look inside – open to 9pm).
  • 21:30  Return to GSI, Bonn
  • 22:30  Get together at GSI Bar009
Saturday, 2nd June 2018
  • 07:00-09:30 British & Continental Breakfast at GSI
  • 09:30  Walk to PostTwinTowers (HQ of Deutsche Post DHL Group, the worldest biggest logistical enterprise)
  • 10:00  Visit Germany’s only Post Office run by Deutsche Post DHL Group (Bring your mail for shipping: there are special oval Cancellations of Post Tower & Beethoven!)
  • 10:30  Walk to Haus der Philatelie /BDPh (HQ of German Philatelic Federation)
  • 11:00  Joining Consilium Philatelicum Conference (CPh is an elitist association with 24 mbs. only)
    • Welcome by CPh-President Wolfgang Maassen FRPSL <also President of AiJP>
    • Lecture on Third Reich Propaganda Mail given by Mr Rüdiger Krenkel RPSL,
    • CEO of German Foundation for Promotion of Philately & Postal History (Stiftung in that same house)
  • 13:00  Walk back to GSI (7 minutes) Lunch & Coffee
  • 15:00  Exchange of ideas & stamps & envelopes
  • 16:00  Tea Break
  • 16:30  Rhodesia Lecture N° 2
  • 18:00  Dinner at GSI or in Historical Center of Bonn City (thereby visiting/viewing the Historical Main Post Office where Alexander von Humboldt & The Royal Family had participated at the Beethoven monument inauguration).

    • Back to GSI, eventually Absacker in Bar009

  • 09:30  Check out of Hotel GSI; Tramway to Haus der Geschichte (10 Minutes)
  • 10:00  English guided tour at House of Contemporary German History the most frequented German Museum (Berlin Wall, British Jeep 1945, Adenauer Me brcedes etc.)
  • 11:30  Coffee at Museum; Tramway back to GSI
  • 12:00  Farewell Lunch at GSI
  • 13:30  many options for joint excursions:
    • option 1: Dragon´s Rock Königswinter (–> photo above of Dragon´s Castle)
    • option 2: Bridge of Remagen Museum (Bridge of Remagen was the last working bridge in WW-II, finally captured by the US Army)
    • option 3: Rhine River Ship Tour to Loreley Rock (interesting but very expensive).

Southern African Societies Conference 2017

Southern African Philatelic Societies Joint Conference

The Southern African Philatelic Societies Joint Conference is an opportunity for all philatelic fans to come and meet representatives from various southern African philatelic societies based in the UK.

Whether you are a beginner or expert, there will be something for everyone.

Some of the societies taking part include:

  • Anglo-Boer War Philatelic Society
  • Bechuanalands & Botswana Society
  • Cape & Natal Study Circle
  • Orange Free State Study Circle
  • Rhodesian Study Circle
  • South Africa Collectors’ Society
  • Transvaal Study Circle, and
  • GB Overprints Society (with interest in Bechuanaland and Zululand issues).

Accomodation

Accommodation is available at the Strawberry Bank Hotel. Facilities and plenty of bedrooms are available on the ground floor.  It is close to junction 6 of the M42, the nearest large railway station is Birmingham International, on the West Coast and London Midland lines and it is only 4.5 miles from Birmingham Airport, should you be travelling from further afield.

If you wish to stay at the hotel, the rooms will cost £80 for dinner, bed & breakfast for single occupancy, £110 for two of you. Please contact us if you are interested.

Auction

The South African Collector’s Society will be holding an auction to coincide with the event.

Programme

Details of the programme have yet to be released. However, following previous formats, Saturday will have up to six formal displays, each with a 45 minute slot available. Then on Sunday, time is given for people to bring something to show, with up to two frames and no more than 10 minutes to present.

The Bechuanaland & Botswana Society will be holding a joint display on Saturday.

WESTPEX 2018

RSC at WESTPEX 2018

The 58th annual WESTPEX Stamp Show will be held in San Francisco, California.

Westpex is one of the premier shows in the USA and with its 300+ exhibit frames in open competition and one of the qualifying shows for the American Philatelic Society’s World Series of Philately competition.  The WESTPEX Grand Award winner is eligible to compete in the Champion of Champions competition at APS National StampShow 2018.

As a special recognition, the RSC will be one of the three featured/guest societies at the 2018 Westpex show.
