Featuring a fine array from the David Carson Collection which includes Nyasaland King Edward VII and King George VI mint high values, and Rhodesia with fine Double Heads and a wonderful array of cancellations ex the Levin Collection.

Spink are to offer the collection of Rhodesia formed by David Carson of Ilkley. The collection includes a good number of Double Heads, mostly mint with the £1 error corner pair with gash, ex Uria, used with 5d. lake-brown and green, and a range of covers and cancellations with many ex the Norman Levin collection.

These include lots offered as Mines, Northern and Southern Rhodesia together with a range of covers including first day envelope franked at 2½d. and postcard at 1d. On the morning of the 26th July, there is another sale in the Lionheart series which also offers a small group of Rhodesia.

: Northern Rhodesia 1963 3d. yellow lower left corner block of twenty-four (6×4), variety orange (eagle) omitted, the first stamp in rows 8, 9 and 10 showing varying traces of orange in the lower part of the shield, superb unmounted mint. The largest intact block remaining from the half sheet of sixty discovered in 1996 and a wonderful showpiece multiple.

: Nyasaland 1938-44 Issue 2/-, 2/6d., 5/-, 10/- and £1, all in complete sheets of sixty (10×6) showing head plate flaws including rare £1 serif on “g” and the 10/- being the rare bluish green and brown-red on pale green shade; unmounted mint; some split perfs. but a fine and very rare assembly

: Nyasaland 1938-44 Issue £1 purple and black on red complete sheet of sixty, Row 4/5 variety serif on “g”, unmounted mint; a few minor gum creases, none affecting the variety. A rare multiple.

: Rhodesia 1913-24 Admiral Issue White Paper, Perforated 14 3d. black and yellow complete sheet of sixty (10×6) with sheet number “83”, [10/20/30/40] showing collar flaws, unmounted mint; a few split perfs. at top, otherwise fine and scarce

: Rhodesia 1966 (9 Feb.) 2d. yellow-orange and deep green vertical marginal pair from the right of the sheet, the top stamp variety yellow-orange omitted, unmounted mint. A fine, rare and visually startling modern error.

: Rhodesia 1977 (17 Jan.) Independence 3d. chocolate and pale blue horizontal pair, the left-hand stamp variety overprint omitted due to a paper fold through this stamp, the right-hand stamp with overprint printing weakly in places due to the paper fold, unmounted mint; the left-hand stamp with rounded corner, undoubtedly occurring during production. A major Rhodesia rarity, being the sole recorded example.

: Southern Rhodesia Revenue Stamps 1924 3/-, 7/6d., 10/-, £1, £5, £10 and £20 complete design imperforate printer’s file proofs in marginal blocks of four from the top of the sheet with imprint, vignette and frame die numbers, the usual punched holes and printer’s correction marks in places; some creases and a few other faults though an impressive and unique group

We continue with countries A-Z with exceptional Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda with the unique 1863 American style “PAID AT IRELAND ISLAND” cover, Falkland Islands, Grenada, Rhodesia with a fine selection of 1910-13 “Double Heads”, Tanganyika, Virgin Islands, Collections and Ranges, etc., the sale concludes with over 350 lots of Great Britain which includes interesting postal history, featuring the fabulous collection of letters and pamphlets by the sone of Rowland Hill and James Chalmers disputing who had invented the postage stamp, the first commercially produced Christmas Card, a fine section of 1840 1d. blacks, Queen Elizabeth II errors and varieties, including the iconic 1962 N.P.Y. 1/3d. with Queen’s head omitted, etc.

Commonwealth Collection of KGVI, a vast and splendid holding replete with wonderful material (note the Kodi revenues!) and a plenitude of interesting varieties. The “Texas” Br. Commonwealth Collection is filled with popular and desirable complete sets, high values and interesting collections. And from Barbados, we have the Keith H. Bayley Collection of KGVI Commonwealth, a large holding of hard to find used sets. Also featured is an interesting group of pre-1800 BWI covers, an extensive collection of Malta, rare Cayman Islands, Mauritius, Br. Guiana and the stellar attraction, the QEII No. Rhodesia 6d plate number block of 4 with inverted watermark!”

: 1953 QEII 6d grey-black Elephant and Giraffe LR corner margin plate number block of 4, variety watermark inverted. NH. Until the discovery of this block there were about 4 examples recorded hinged and one known NH. Also about 4 are known used indicating that the sheet was sent to the colony. Unrecorded by Pierron. Absolutely pristine. Unique. A major Elizabethan rarity. VF. (SG £20,000)
