1943 – Bulawayo Attains City Status

Bulawayo – City Status

4th November, 1943

The Municipality of Bulawayo became the City of Bulawayo under Proclamation 21 on the 4th November, 1943. Under the same proclamation, the Municipal Council of Bulawayo became the City Council of Bulawayo.

Each year in November the City of Bulawayo celebrates the declaration of the City during the month of November.

Barclays Bank Pavillion – The Albert Schweitzer Exhibition

As part of Trade Fair Rhodesia 1978, Barclays Bank held The Albert Schweitzer Exhibition in the Barclays Bank Pavillion. To commemorate this event, they produced a First Day Cover for the stamp release, postmarked on the first day of the trade fair.

Covers can be found with a special exhibition cachet (previously used for RHOBANK 1975), in aquamarine, black and purple. Covers can also be found hand-signed by Mickey Goddard, co-ordinator Albert Schweitzer Archive, Gunsbach, France. They can also be found with a stamped signature.

2018 Southern Africa Philately Conference

Southern African Philatelic Societies Joint Conference

The Southern African Philatelic Societies Joint Conference is an opportunity for all philatelic fans to come and meet representatives from various southern African philatelic societies based in the UK.

Whether you are a beginner or expert, there will be something for everyone.

Societies that usually take part include:

  • Anglo-Boer War Philatelic Society
  • Bechuanalands & Botswana Society
  • Cape & Natal Study Circle
  • Orange Free State Study Circle
  • Rhodesian Study Circle
  • South Africa Collectors’ Society
  • Transvaal Study Circle, and
  • GB Overprints Society (with interest in Bechuanaland and Zululand issues).

Details

Accommodation

Accommodation is available at the Strawberry Bank Hotel. Facilities and plenty of bedrooms are available on the ground floor.  It is close to junction 6 of the M42, the nearest large railway station is Birmingham International, on the West Coast and London Midland lines and it is only 4.5 miles from Birmingham Airport, should you be travelling from further afield.

If you wish to stay at the hotel, the rooms will cost £60 for bed & breakfast for single occupancy plus appx. £21 for a three course dinner.

Rhodesian Study Circle

Members of the Rhodesian Study Circle are expected to be attending this event.

Auction

The South African Collector’s Society will be holding an auction to coincide with the event.

Dealers attending include Paul van Zeyl, David Morrison, Chris Rainey, Otto Peetoom & Simon Peetoom.

The afternoon session is given over to the Cape & Natal Society. Bob Hill and Robert Johnson have coordinated a number of different displays that will cover a range of different subjects. Ian Shapiro will be giving an airing to a collection not seen in quite a number of years.

Auction items available for viewing throughout Saturday & Sunday. The auction will not start until all of the bidders are back from lunch.

StampShow2018 – Here Be Dragons

Stampshow 2018

StampShow 2018 will be hosted in Columbus, Ohio. It marks the 132nd annual convention of the American Philatelic Society and will be co-hosted with the American Topical Association.

Each year, stamp collectors, exhibitors, historians and members of the general public gather to socialize, increase philatelic knowledge, and exchange stamps. The 2018 show will feature 100+ dealers, societies, live auctions, literature and philatelic exhibits, more than 100 meetings and seminars, and first-day-of-issue ceremonies for new stamps. The show is FREE and open to the public.

Rhodesian Study Circle: 2019 Annual Conference

Our 31st Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting is scheduled to be held at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire once again after a highly successful 2017 & 2018 meeting.

Members Displays

If you want to show something or just talk on a subject of interest, please tell Adrian de Bourbon beforehand so that he can arrange a running order.

Sunday Displays can be large or just one sheet, but talking is limited to a maximum of 10 minutes.

Lunches & Dinner

Friday Dinner

This will cost £19.50 for two courses, with a choice of curries and accompaniments.  If you want to have dinner, please sign the booking sheet at the hotel reception or let Adrian de Bourbon know. Payment in cash/card, or charge to hotel room account.

Saturday Lunch

A bar service and sandwiches will be available at cost.

Saturday Dinner – Conference Dinner

All members staying over are urged to attend the dinner (with partners).  It is our key social and formal gathering of the weekend.

  • Cost: pre-order three courses at £30
  • Dress code: smart or smart casual.
