William Hayward Ltd

Great Britain

William Hayward played a significant part in the life of Winchester, running businesses both as a cycle maker and motor agent in Hyde Street and as a tobacconist in the High Street.

Hayward’s tobacconist shop traded throughout the first half of the twentieth century, firstly under his father, Joseph, and from about 1904 until more than a decade after his death in 1939 as W Hayward Ltd. He also made a significant contribution to the civic life of the city; he was elected a councillor in 1910, mayor in 1925 and alderman in 1934, chairing various committees throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
