Nyasaland

Department of Public Relations

The Department of Public Relations (Public Relations Office) was established in February 1949. The purpose of the department was to interpret the policy of the Government to the people of the protectorate; to act in an advisory and co-ordinating capacity for distributing information on the various development schemes; to keep in touch with public opinion and publicise the affairs of the Protectorate in Great Britain.

The African Book Centre was also created in 1949 as an agency of the Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland Publications Bureau, distributing and selling publications of the bureau.

In July 1954, a general reorganisation of information services was undertaken in Nyasaland following the establishment of the Federal Information Department in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia.
