D Knight & Co.


Daniel Knight was born 8th February, 1847 in Guernesy, United Kingdom. At some stage he moved to Cape Town, South Africa where he established a merchant service in 1876 called D Knight & Co.. His business involved importing boots and shoes.

In 1894 he founded Kingswood College, and later between 1901-1903 became Mayor of Grahamstown. In 1907-08 he presented evidence to the Customs Tariff Commission on the impacts of importing goods:

By 1910 the business also had a branch in Bulawayo. Percival Lionel Farley was the managing partner of the Bulawayo branch. The business had moved from Fife St to Abercorn St, Bulawayo.

Knight died on 20th January, 1923 in Grahamstown, South Africa. In 1949, Farley was shot in the Abercorn St store and died.
