Charter

Arthur Newby Wetherall Strickland was born in Greytown, Natal in 1866. He married the eldest daughter of the Meikle family, Jeannie Valance Graham Meikle (b.1864).

In 1892, the three Meikle brothers left Natal for the Mashonaland goldfields with five loads of general merchandise and three loads of liquor. In the same year they bought Marshlands Farm at Charter and constructed a Hotel and Store which Arthur Strickland would run.

Arthur established A Strickland & Co as a General Dealer. Arthur and his wife later moved to N’odzi, Penhalonga, where Arthur was listed as a farmer. On 12th January, 1928 while at Premier Butchers in Umtali, Arthur suffered from a cardiac arrest and died.

Mrs Strickland’s died in 1957.
