1953 – The Kingsley Fairbridge Memorial
The Kingsley Fairbridge Memorial
8th July, 1953
The Kingsley Fairbridge Memorial statue at Christmas Pass was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen Mother during the 1953 Royal Tour. Also present was the Mayor of Umtali, Mr. Harry Went and other local dignitaries.
Kingsley Fairbridge was an Umtali boy who pioneered child migration to Australia by means of his farm schools. The statue depicts him at the age of 12, with his African servant, Jack, and his dog, who were with him when he beheld his vision of child immigrants from the crowded streets of Britain populating the Empire’s empty spaces.
